Children at Risk of Neglect or Abuse


Child neglect is a form of child maltreatment, a deficit in meeting a child's basic needs including the failure to provide basic physical, health care, supervision, nutrition, emotional, education and/or safe housing needs. Society generally believes there are necessary behaviours a caregiver must provide a child in order for the child to develop physically, socially, and emotionally. Causes of neglect may be as a result of a number of issues.


Child abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or children. Child abuse can occur in a child's home, or in the organisations, schools or communities a child interacts with. There are four major categories of child abuse:

  • Neglect
  • Physical abuse
  • Psychological abuse
  • Sexual abuse
