About This Report:
Lowest birth levels occurred in the period 2000-2003. These are children aged 7-10 in 2010.
Numbers of births have increased steadily from 2003 to 2010. In 2010 there were 7,066 births in Leicestershire County, more than in any year since 1991 and 1992, an increase from the level of about 6,800 annually for the previous 3 years. Leicester City had 5,299 births in 2010, The level has been over 5,000 annually for 2007-2010, higher than at any time since 1991. Births are affected by the ages at which women have children, and by the number of women in those age groups.
The annual number of deaths in Leicestershire has been relatively consistently between 5,400 and 5.900, and averaged 5,600 from 2006 to 2010. In Leicester City the annual number of deaths has been decreasing, and averaged 2,500 from 2006 to 2010, compared to 3,000 from 1991 to 2000. This is related both to improving survival rates, and changing age structure.
