Report : Small area population age breakdown

Date: Tue 30th January, 2007

Description: Age Breakdown

An age breakdown is not available in the Leicestershire County Council estimates, but the National Statistics experimental small area population estimates do provide this for Lower Super Output Area and Middle Super Output Area. These figures include a broad age breakdown (under 16, 16-29, 30-44, 45-pension age and pension age and over) for Lower Super Output area, and a 5 year age/sex breakdown for Middle Super Output area.

A file of an Excel Spreadsheet showing the broad age breakdown for Leicestershire wards is provided in this entry .

The Leicestershire County Council total household and population estimates for 2004 are available at

These should be consulted in any enquiry about small area population since these include:

  • Parish and settlement level estimates
  • Ward level estimates
  • A geographical name for the Lower Super Output areas
  • A household estimate
  • A population estimate based on household change
  • Total change from the 2001 census

Following a number of queries about age breakdown, here is a file showing the mid 2004 broad age breakdown for Leicestershire wards, produced from the National Statistics experimental small area population estimates.

Leicestershire has some issues with some of the figures from National Statistics Population Estimates, since these are not always consistent with our estimates based on local dwelling stock change.
