Around a million people live in the Leicester and Leicestershire area with about a third of its population living within the Leicester boundary.

Although Leicester can be described as urban the Leicester and Leicestershire area is geographically diverse. Large parts of Leicestershire are rural and contains many key settlements/market towns (Loughborough, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray).

Leicestershire comprises of seven local authority districts, Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire and Oadby & Wigston.

Both Leicester and each of the local authority district areas have their own unique identities and are very different. Many of these differences are influenced by economic factors such as local industry and employment
