About This Report:
Office for National Statistics (ONS) published 2001-2009 Ethnic Group Population Estimates for Local Authorities on 18th May 2011. The figures for 2002 to 2007 are revised from those previously published. The figures are consistent with the ONS population estimates by age and sex revised and updated after May 2010, but do not take into account the results of the 2011 census.
The attached spreadsheet gives total ethnic group figures and percentages calculated for mid-2009, for Leicestershire Districts, County, Leicester City, Rutland, East Midlands, and England.
The figures are changed from those previously available, especially for areas much affected by international migration, such as Leicester City, and Charnwood. Leicester City is estimated to have 40% population in the BME group in 2009. The revisions have affected the 2007 overall BME percentage for Leicester City previously given (40% compared to 43% previously estimated) and East Midlands region (6% compared to 12% previously estimated). Leicestershire districts are estimated to have some increases in Black and Minority Ethnic population from 2007 to 2009.
The ONS Statistical Bulletin attached gives more information for England as a whole. Leicester City is identified as the authority with the highest percentage (19%) of population in the Indian ethnic group.
